Think of Dry Needling as a western version of acupuncture. Dry Needling involves using a solid, filament needle (as used in acupuncture) to target particular tissues with the aim of stimulating a therapeutic effect. There are several popular techniques which focus on needling a trigger point to either deactivate, or activate, a muscle depending on how it is applied.
Does it hurt? It is more localised than a massage, and the needle means we can get to some of the deeper tissues. It can be more painful than a deep sports massage, but it is much quicker, so the pain is over swiftly. Generally, you do not feel the insertion of the needle, pain is felt briefly when the trigger point is stimulated.
Is it safe? Yes, it is very safe. All our therapists are trained in the correct techniques, have a deep understanding of your anatomy and the locations to avoid that do involve increased risks, use sterile procedures and only use the best quality needles. There can be some post treatment soreness in the area, once again often not unlike a deep massage. Some people can experience a reduction in their blood pressure, and sometimes faint after needling due to a vasovagal response, however this is rare.
What injuries benefit from Dry Needling? Pretty much every injury can benefit from needling is some way. The most common scenario is when there is increased tone, or spasm, within a muscle/s that we want to settle down quickly. For example, when a muscle has been over-worked, or when there is protective spasm due to an injury in a related area.
